iMessage reply’s are gray not blue or green
When my partner sends a text to my iPhone XR from his very old iPhone SE (1st Gen?) they are always in the color gray, rather than blue. What would cause this?

Incoming texts are always gray. The sending text would be blue for iMessage and green for SMS.
