Help me understand how Contacts work

Help me understand how Contacts work.

Sometimes when I enter a new Contact on my Mac, it will not show up on my iPhone. In troubleshooting this, I get very confused. When I edit an existing contact, those edits DO show up everywhere. When I look at the Contacts on my Mac, I see a column on the left with about a dozen different places. I am confused by this. I want every single contact on my Mac to be on my iPhone, and every single contact on my iPhone to be on my Mac. I'm confused by contacts that are shown “on my Mac”. I don't know what to do to have everything everywhere.

I NEVER want to have a Contact on one device, but not on another device.

Contacts can sync from other sources besides iCloud. For example if you have google mail added to your iPhone's mail app, it can also have contacts. In settings under your iPhone, then mail, then accounts, check which mail accounts you have added. Check which ones you have contacts turned on in that area for each account. Then you should check all your devices to ensure you have contacts turned on for all the same accounts in each device. Also if you are using iCloud contacts, then you need to make sure you have contacts turned on for iCloud for each device in settings or they won't sync.

Contacts can be stored in different locations.

iCloud, On Your Mac or on a 3rd party email account.

Contacts on iCloud and 3rd party email accounts will sync across to all devices that have said account added to them.

Contacts created in the "On your Mac" group, will only exist "On your Mac".

If you don't ever want a contact to exist only on your Mac, then don't create the contact under that group. Choose one of the other groups instead before creating a contact.

If you have the "All Contacts" group selected when creating a new contact, it will create it in whatever location you have set as the Default Account in Contacts Menu ➜ Settings ➜ General.

My needs are simple. I don't care about sinking anything with my email program. I just want to type an address into my Mac and have it show up on my iPhone and vice versa. Usually, when I enter a contact on my Mac, it does show up on my iPhone, but sometimes it does not. I don't know why it works sometimes, and other times not.

I don't know what you mean by "contacts turned on". To me, Contacts is just an app on my Mac and an app on my iPhone. I am on unaware of how you can turn it on or off other than by launching the app and then quitting it.

I think that's my problem. Generally, I am creating contacts on my Mac Pro at home. Right now, I am traveling and using my MacBook Pro. I looked on my MacBook Pro and the settings default to "on my Mac". I’ll bet you $23.80 that when I look on my Mac Pro that setting is for iCloud. I will change the default setting on my MacBook Pro to iCloud and see what happens.
