When editing a photo, why doesn’t the eraser head option work?

Then you are using the mark-up extension. It will add a graphics overlay to the image, but not modify the photo beneath this overlay. The eraser tool can only erase the items in the added graphics, when you are drawing or writing onto the photo.

We had these tools for a short time on the iPhone and iPad, a long ime ago, when Apple released iPhoto iOS - I purchased my first iPad just because of iPhoto iOS. Just with a touch of our fingers or the light pen I could retouch objects or dodge and burn certain areas. Apple has shown they can do it. But the upgrade to iOS 8 killed iPhoto on the iPhone and iPad, and since then I am mainly using it as a book reader or for viewing photos, bur no longer for editing photos.
