my ipad won't play videos in photos

My ipad plays streamed videos but does not play videos in the phtos app. They appear in the app. When I open the video I see the frames at the bottom of the screen, but the play button is not there, and if I try to scroll the frames, they do not respond. Help. I am a senior. I do not understand. Ios 16.5.1

iPad (5th generation)

Thanks but my problem remains. I cannot play videos in my photos app. The appear as videos, but only show the first frame. There is no play button when I open a video. I can play these same videos on my ipad mini 5th gen. and I can stream from various apps. I even tried to airdrop a video that works from the mini to the ipad. No luck. I don't understand.

Re: my ipad won't play videos in photos

Apple support's online article (link below) may help:

Play videos and slideshows in the Photos app on iPad - Apple Support

says

for iOS 16 versions:

"As you browse photos and videos in the Photos app, tap a video to play it on your iPad".

and

"Tap the player controls at the top of the screen to pause, unmute, favorite, share, delete, or see video information; tap the screen to hide the player controls".

The above article contains more info.

All the best :-)

You might want to try a "tap" on that first photo that is displayed, to see if the controls appear ...

else:

The video files may be in older video-file formats that are not compatible with the iPad's up-to-date iPadOS version:

The format is just the kind of video file, and can be checked by looking at the file-name extension ... eg: [filename].extension (as in IMG234.JPG for a photo)

.HEVC (eg: from iPhone) and .AVI (eg: from camera) are fairly recent video formats that should play ok on your iPad

.MOV is an older format used by the Mac QuickTime app.

.M4V video files generally play on Mac (QuickTime) or a Windows PC

(NB: some .M4V files from iTunes are restricted (C), and eg: may need to be played on an authorised Mac.)

____________________________________________________________________

On a Mac some older video file formats can be made playable by converting them to newer formats eg: may convert by opening them in the QuickTime app

Apple support explains:

If a media file doesn't open or play on your Mac, iPhone, or iPad - Apple Support.

Hi retireD62,

welcome to this community discussion thread.

Re: Can’t play videos on ipad

Thank you for letting us know. We'd like to help, yet don't have much info from you.

You may want to first try restarting your iPad (deletes temporary files, re-establishes connections, may update recent setting changes, & often restores order if something is not working as expected) Restart your iPad - Apple Support

Else:

Wondering whether the video files are in .HEVC, .MP4, .MOV or another video format, also if error messages appear when you try to open the files in Photos app.

You may find a solution in the suggestions given earlier in this discussion.

If you would like more help: please let us also know which iPad version you use,

Eg: How to: Identify your iPad model - Apple Support

and

which iPadOS version is installed on the iPad. (Eg: You may want to check for updates to the newest compatible one in Settings > General > Software update)

(NB: It is a good idea to back up your data first, if you try updating to see if it helps)

All the best :-)
