Your photos will only get uploaded anywhere, if you have enabled this in the Settings on the iPhone.

  • Look at the Settings > AppleID (Your name) > iCloud Photos.
  • If you have iCloud Photos enabled, your photos will be synced with iCloud Photos Library and stored in iCloud as well as on your iPhone. From iCloud they will be synced with your other devices that are also having iCloud Photos enabled, for example on an iPad or a Mac. Whatever you are doing in Phots on any device will sync with iCloud across all synced devices, so your Photos Library will always be identical on all devices, very convenient.
  • If you have My Photo Stream enabled, a copy of the most recently taken new photos will be uploaded to My Photo Stream for thirty days so your other devices can download the new photos from there. This is a very old cloud service and only users with on older Apple ID can use this service. It is about to shut off. You may not even be seeing the Settings for My Photo Stream on your device, if your AplleID is only a few years old.
  • You may also have enabled Shared Albums in the Settings > AppleID (Your name) > iCloud Photos. Only photos you actively share will get uploaded to a shared album.

Only My Photo Stream will be turned off. It will not have any consequences for the items in iCloud Photos or Shared Albums. If you have not used My Photo Stream during the last thirty days, there will be nothing to do for you.
