This number is in my contacts. There are 3 telephone numbers associated with the persons name. The name shows up at the top, NOT any phone number. I am trying to determine the number that texted me so I can use the correct one for other purposes.

It's when it's a known sender that it's an issue.

There might be multiple numbers within an organization, or other times for some reason sometimes texts from an individual will come from his phone number and some will come from iCloud. If they're all in the contact card, iMessage doesn't distinguish. It's important because it'll reply to whatever the last number was, and that could be iCloud or a phone number that sends automated messages and isn't set up to receive replies.

Thank you.

Drifty: why would texts from a known sender's iPhone suddenly start coming from their iCloud account rather than from their phone number? That's what I was trying to narrow down with this query. I had to add the iCloud account to their contact card to integrate the text threads. They were traveling at the time, but now that they're home, the texts are still coming from their iCloud account.
