Part of the screen doesn't work on my son's phone. I am looking to send it in but it needs to be erased first and I can't type in the password. I'm wondering if I can reset/erase the phone from my computer?

No, it's going to ask for the passcode and to trust the computer, you can remotely wipe the phone using findmy as outlined here If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch is lost or stolen - Apple Support
