Limit or set amount of space for iCloud?

Hello,

I have a Mac Mini with a 250GB Hard Drive. I have icloud turned on and set to "optimize" the space. However, iCloud downloads so much data that I only have about 5GB of storage left on my HD. I'm unable to even do a software update due to not having enough space. Is there any way to set how much free space iCloud leaves on my HD? Or any other way to control how much HD space iCloud uses?

If not, this is a big warning that you need a HD that is as large as your iCloud storage or else. Seems to defeat the entire purpose of iCloud and especially the "optimize" setting.

Does this mean that everyone else has the same problems with iCloud? Even if you set it to Optimize your HD, it downloads as much as possible until your HD isn't available for anything else. So it only works if each of your device's storage is nearly as large as or larger than your iCloud storage that you have used? My problem is I use iCloud to sync a few different devices. And by the time I have created files on all of those devices, the iCloud storage used is much larger than my smallest HD, which is the one in my Mac Mini.

Is there no way to tell it how much of your HD you want it to leave available to other uses?
