Slow computer + "Music" has been "Saving Music Library" for five (5) days

Ever since I upgraded to macOS Ventura 13.4 my Mac has been ridiculously slow -- for everything. I chatted with Apple, re-loaded the OS twice, and now, after moving all of my music library (1.97 TB) from an external hard drive to "Music," my Mac has been "Saving Music Library" for five (5) days. I've also started having other problems. Pages files on another HD cannot be opened, or, they are "not found," then clicking on the icon again, they open, same with jpegs. Does anyone have a solution? I'm afraid to force quit my computer for fear of losing any/all music files that may have been loaded to music. iTunes was wonderful, Music not so much. Once I get my Mac working properly again, any suggestions for a more stable, reliable mP3/WAV player? Every time I upgrade to the "latest" macOS, I lose all of my previous playlists, etc? HELP!

iMac 27″, macOS 13.4

Hi TParis,

The following page has some guidance that may help to improve the performance when you have a slow computer:

If your Mac runs slowly - Apple Support

Regarding the files from the external drive copying slowly, we'd suggest running Disk Utility to ensure that there are no faults with the hard drive. Here are instructions for that:

Repair a storage device in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support

You mentioned losing your playlists, are you an Apple Music subscriber? Also, do you usually keep your Music library on an external storage device? The answers to those questions will help us to determine how to proceed.

Cheers!
