Monterey installer

I receive frequent requests to upgrade to Monterey and I always check to be sure I have updated to the most recent version. The response is "your computer is up to date". Then I find the 12+GB installer in the applications folder. It is just very strange.

I can understand an update notification, but dropping the entire installer onto the machine seems a bit over the top.

You can leave the installer in the Applications folder no harm there— then it will not download again.
