I have an iphone 11 - after the latest updates 16-16.5 i can longer open videos sent in messenager. what is the work around or how do i save video to my photos to view from there?

Messenger? as in Facebook Messenger? If so contact Facebook for help with their apps.
Or do you mean Apple Messages as implied by the support document you posted from?
Messages is on my iphone not messenger
