I had this issue also & finally figured it out.

1) Connect to CarPlay and Start your googlemaps navigation to the endpoint.

2) Tap the screen in your car once & when the options appear on the top row, tap the Gear icon for settings.

3) Now there should be an icon on the bottom row for TrueNorth.. on my screen it was Blue (meaning it was activated).

4) Tap the TrueNorth icon once & this should deactivate it. Then exit from Settings. Navigation should be back to normal.

Hope this works for you also.

Hey there maran115,

We see you're having some issues with Google Maps orientation, and you've already tested to determine that it only happens when using CarPlay. That's helpful information, and we'd like to see if we can further assist.

As a general practice, we always recommend backing up and making sure you're on the latest software if you're experienced an issue like this. If needed, here's how you can update to iOS 16.5: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

If you find the issue persists, please use this link to reach us directly: Get Support

Thank you so much! This works perfectly, it's easy, and it can be done on the fly. And by turning me on to this Settings button, I discovered a lot of other cool, easy choices I can make on the fly. This orientation problem is a bug and a serious one, because it changes to "North Up" by itself at random times! It caused me a LOT of trouble recently: a wrong turn that cost me the huge bridge toll on the Golden Gate Bridge and the time and trouble of crossing and re-crossing this bridge to get to my destination. I was so embarrassed in front of a guest I was trying to impress. There was no way I could figure out the complicated route, and the voice help by Google Maps wasn't sufficient. Because the map was not oriented in the way I was driving and because there were so many options, it was mind boggling to the point that I had to simply guess which of 3 possible ways I should go, and I guessed wrong.

Is this bug the fault of Apple or Google? I've never had it happen on Apple Maps.

Mory21, you rock! What a simple fix for a problem that has been driving me crazy! TrueNorth has never been activated until my iPhone 15. I went through all my iPhone setting and Google map settings. Even sat in my car like a crazy person tapping around settings. I found your comment and it resolved my problem in under a min. Thanks for sharing!
