“Why do I have to pay now?!”

Alright! I’ve had it! I’ve been trying to get my App Store to Japan so I can update my FGO JP, but for some reason, unknown even to CTHULU, or whatever old god you know about, I’m being required to select a payment method, two of which don’t work, and one of which I don’t even know about! What should I do to get the “None” option back?! Should I just wait for whatever pending subscriptions I have to pass if I canceled them?! I’m so frustrated, because I’ve never had to pay until now!

You're not wasting my time. But, I don't know why it varies by region. I also suspect that some places it used to be available, it is no longer. However, if no changes were made to the account, it might have been grandfathered in.

I found no references to the "None" option in the U.S. support document other than the last section:

Remove a payment method online

You can also remove a payment method after signing in to appleid.apple.com.

In some countries and regions, you might need to add a new payment method using appleid.apple.com in order to remove the existing payment method.

Some other websites (older posts) implied that you can't select "None" if you have any outstanding charges. So, get the subscriptions removed and see if it becomes and option.

That’s…stupid! Friends of mine have ALWAYS had the “None” option, and to my knowledge, still do! Why don’t I get that option anymore?! That’s not fair! Anyway, that’s only “subscription” that isn’t “cancelled” is my Discord Nitro subscription that’s “expired” by now. If I get rid of that, might I be able to get this to work?
