The time machine backup seems to be working fine, but I wanted to check it out with Disk Utility First Aid just to be cautious. When I try to run First Aid, I get a message saying the disc couldn't be unmounted. Is that normal?

I don't routinely use Disk Utility First Aid on my Time Machine drives as they work just fine. If I were to do so, I would boot the Mac into Recovery, and use Disk Utility from there, before rebooting normally.
I'm guessing it is normal. Try unchecking "Back Up automatically" first. If that doesn't work, you might have to remove the drive from "Select Disk…". Add it back once done.
Might work as well. Was going to mention Recovery Mode but was worn out from typing. 😎
