full name changes to all CAPS

When I start to write my name iMac on Safari suggests an auto correct of all caps for all three names: James Lee J*** turns into JAMES LEE J***. If I inadvertently press space or continue typing, I have to erase and retype then close out the suggestion.

Turning all caps off doesn't work. Neither does replacement (it only allows one word, no spaces).

Lee

I have this same problem. Somehow it's learned a particular phrase that it thinks should be in all caps, and replaces it every time. This does not work to reset it. Switching it off prevents it from happening but when you switch it back on the issue comes right back.

Is there a way to reset the phrases it's learned? I've found no way to do this after extensive research.

To remove words in your macOS dictionary, follow these steps:

  1. Open another TextEdit document (see instructions above).
  2. Type the word you wish to remove from the dictionary (again, don’t press the spacebar).
  3. Press and hold the Control key on your keyboard, click the word and select the option ‘Unlearn Spelling’.

In OS Version 14.5 on MacBook, this can be found by Settings/Keyboard/Text Input/Edit... and switching off "Capitalize words automatically".

I don't know why it selectively capitalized some of the names of some of my coworkers, and not all of them. But simply by toggling this off it stopped this problem. Really weird.

Toggling it back on AFTERWARD did seem to reset this (it didn't keep capitalizing the name of my co-worker in my e-mails and documents), and it did not keep capitalizing these names it would ALWAYS capitalize prior to this... but I'm just choosing to leave this feature off in case it comes back and I forget how to reset it again.

I've experienced this issue, too, with the name of a historical figure. For example, if I type George Locke it will be converted to uppercase but if I type George Lock (no e) or John Locke it will not be converted. This happens in apps such as Notes and Mail.

Turning off Auto Capitalization solves the problem. This name is not in my contacts or user spelling dictionary.

I've experienced this before with one other name but I don't recall it now. I've typed tens of thousands of names in the past couple of years and only encountered this issue once before so this seems a very niche bug.

This issue happens with words that are not in a user spelling dictionary or in Contacts.

Also, while it was repeatedly converting Locke to LOCKE for me on March 31, I can't replicate it today. So either it is an intermittent issue which may speak to why this is difficult to pin down, or it was fixed by an update since then.

I am using the same spelling language now as I was in March - I never use Automatic by Language.
