2nd iCloud account & family sharing details

Hi, if anyone could help me out I'd be truly grateful... my boss asked me to help his wife out with some "computer issues"... Stakes are high! Just got here and learned task details... and it's a bit of an issue as I'm personally not an Apple products user.... pls excuse my description / questions, I just don't know about these things!

What she needs done:

Currently the family of 4 is all connected to one icloud storage account through family sharing... As I understand the max storage is 2TB. They're @ 1.97TB.

One son is using ~¾ of that, so she wants to create him a 2nd iCloud.

Not a great project for me to forge into and learn as I go as I obviously need to be careful that no one's files are deleted, etc.

From what I understand, considerations are:

1) will this work, and is it a second iCloud account, or a 2nd icloud storage acct (if that is a separate thing) or both she needs?

2) how does this relate to family sharing, will that still be possible?

3) can son's existing data be transferred to his new acct easily? All at once or piece mail necessary?

I understand what needs to be done in principle but I'm just nervous about all the nuances of this task since it's a bit of a foreign language to me... And it's really important that I don't delete / lose any existing data... I'm having a hard time understanding the relationship between the iCloud account at something that's shared and then how "family sharing" plays into the equation...

If anyone could take a moment to walk me thru this it would be a life-saver... details of course would be appreciated but even one-off important thoughts / dos & donts re: the process...

Thanks so much.... Maybe by the time I'm done I'll be a convert to Apple myself!

Not really. The son already has their own Apple ID, they are just using shared space. The family can get up to 4 TB by subscribing to Apple ONE and maxing out iCloud storage. Or, if the son is of age, he can be removed from the family and have his own account.

2) how does this relate to family sharing, will that still be possible?

Only if the son remains part of the family. Children cannot be removed from a family, just moved to another family.

3) can son's existing data be transferred to his new acct easily? All at once or piece mail necessary?

As the son already has their own Apple ID, the content belongs to the ID. There is nothing to move.

It's probably far easier to have the son remove items from his phone.

Thanks very much. We've made some progress and it seems clear that the best solution is to upgrade to AppleOne premiere, did that already, which provides 2tb, and then have a second family member purchase and share a new iCloud+ acct which will provide another 2tb... Giving an effective 4 TB shared family iCloud storage, which will suffice (for the next year or so LOL)...

I went into one of sons phones and tried to upgrade to iCloud plus+ but it wasn't an obvious option.... Then Mom and son had to leave for something so assuming the logic is sound here, I need to figure out how to purchase new iCloud Plus account from son's phone, and then share it with the family.... any thoughts to add would be appreciated, many many thanks for your efforts and response
