apple software updated to 13.4 (22F66) and now my desktop is a mess.

It may be that I answered a question wrong. It appears that all of my documents have been dumped onto the desktop. Help! I don't want all these files on the desktop.

MacBook Air, macOS 13.4

I was able to get the answer from Chat Support:

  • "It looks like you turned on iCloud Drive. We can turn this off. I am sending the steps now.
  • From your Mac, choose Apple menu  > System Settings. Click Apple ID, then click iCloud. Next to iCloud Drive, click Options. Deselect Desktop & Documents Folders. Click Done. "

All fixed now! Simple solution, thankfully!

If you use Finder and navigate to the Desktop folder while in 'List' View, you could then sort them by 'Kind'. Then you highlight the first file and then scroll down to the last file then while holding the shift key, it will highlight all those files. Then drag them to Documents. I'd create a new folder in Documents called 'From Desktop' or something similar to drag them into first.

Thanks for this. I am hoping there is a way to undo what I have done. There were 2 questions I think - one was something about updating all documents to the cloud, to which I answered yes. Can't remember the other. It told me it created a new file - "Desktop-Cynthia's MacBook Air", which I can see. It contains the files and folders that were on my desktop prior to this update.
