iMessage bug - no back button

iPad Mini 6 running iOS 16.5.

In iMessage - when you are in an individual conversation, the message space takes up the whole screen and there is no back button or arrow to return to your other conversations on the left hand side.

You are forced to kill the messages app and restart the app. Then and only can can you once again view the full list of iMessage conversations.
