Since latest update 16.5 every time I use safari on my iPad and iPhone the screen freezes, it’s annoying. Anyone else having same issue? Going forward I may start ignoring Apples updates

This is a genuine issue, and it's extremely dysfunctional. This response is dismissive, and not particularly helpful.

I value the functionality of my phone beyond some obscure data exploit that barely anyone will ever run into, I think the main priority should be not to make a vital app like Safari essentially unusable.

And no, Safari works perfectly well on both my iPhone13 and iPad running 16.5

Hey that's great. I hope you understand how little that actually means. The question was "is anyone else having that issue?" — The answer is yes.

Since iOS 16.5, every time I come back into Safari, it hangs. It's completely unresponsive. I have to wait some time for the app to crash out, before it can be successfully relaunched. Closing it by up-swiping doesn't resolve the issue. The OS needs to see the app has become unresponsive and then terminate it.

This is extremely annoying. Annoying enough to make someone re-think doing updates automatically, or in a timely manner. As of 16.5.1 this still hasn't been fixed, so it really will discourage people from updating.

No amount of "EVER EVER EVER" on your part will change that.

Restarting the device doesn't help. Clearing history and cookies doesn't help (and only adds to the annoyance). This is a genuine issue.

It's hard enough to get people to take security seriously without basically the largest tech company in the world, who trades on their products "just working" putting out updates which disable major apps for some users.

Thankfully I'm not experiencing this on my iPad Pro, but my iPhone 14 Pro Max running iOS 16.5.1 is an extremely frustrating device to use now, because of this issue.

Nothing worse than internet pollution from tech "helpers" who dismiss anything that isn't happening directly to them. It's just noise.

Totally agree & my answer is YES- having same issue described & that was what I searched for & hpw I arrived here.

and already tried all the usual restarting phone, plug & unplug, clear caches & I dont t grace a lot of down loads or movies or any music at all & so have a LOT of storage !!

So, don’t like the dismissive responses either

It’s clearly a new issue after latest update on my iPhone mini 13.

and as to a later response on here, NO, I don’t want to just get Google Chrome.

Hello, im just curious to see if you were able to resolve this issue with safari. I've updated my phone recently and it gave me the same issue plus it's locking up when going to photos on my phone at times. The only way i by passed this with Safari was just downloading Google Chrome and using that instead. It works almost the same way along with extra features. Im sure by now you've had to have had found a resolution lol. If not, just get google chrome

Never, EVER, ignore updates unless you don’t value your personal data. And no, Safari works perfectly well on both my iPhone13 and iPad running 16.5. Have you tried turning your iPhone and iPad off, wait a minute or two, and turn them back on. That often fixes the type of glitches you are experiencing. First rule of troubleshooting electronics? Unplug the thing, wait a couple of minutes, plug the thing back in.

You can also try deleting caches and cookies from Safari.

I’m still having this issue. As far as the one comment about always do the updates, my sons first iPhone he ignored every update and he has zero issues. He had this phone from 2007 until Apple quit supporting it.

An interesting thing about spyware: when its installed there is absolutely no indication that it is present. So you won’t have any issues if your phone is infected with malware. Since the beginning of this year updates have blocked 75 paths to infect an iOS device. So naturally, your son would have zero issues, even if his phone was infected.

That’s why, when users say that their phone is misbehaving, it is almost certainly never from a virus or other malware.

I’m also having this problem. It’s been happening for quite a while. I’ve reset my phone completely (which then caused me problems logging back into my banking app 😤). I’m using an old IPhone XR running iOS 17.2.1. The battery is fine and there is plenty of free memory. It’s really annoying when it randomly freezes - usually when using Safari but sometimes

on other apps too. It generally freezes when using a WiFi network and my workaround is to switch to 4G and then back to wifi.

Hey that's great. I hope you understand how little that actually means. The question was "is anyone else having that issue?" — The answer is yes.

No matter what problem you list, the answer will ALWAYS be “yes”, because with over 2 billion iPhones in use there will always be others with the same symptom (which may not be the same problem). Thus, the question is totally useless in diagnosing a problem.

If you have a problem with Safari the following troubleshooting steps should be taken:

  • If you are using VPN delete the VPN app and profile (because updates frequently break the VPN network settings)
  • Go to Settings/Safari and tap Clear History & Website Data
  • Force-quit the Safari app, restart your phone, and relaunch it

If that resolves the issue and you still want VPN (which is actually useless, makes you more vulnerable to tracking, and slows down your phone) reinstall the VPN.
