Safari popups open App Store.app and iTunes.app

This is about Macs, not iOS devices. Please don't give an answer relating to iOS.

Sometimes when I visit a site, a popup comes up and automatically launches the App Store or iTunes. Is there any way to refuse to let Safari open apps automatically?

For the record, I'm still on 10.14 Mojave for app compatibility reasons (I BOUGHT the apps and the new versions require subscriptions). I don't think newer versions have an option to turn off this behavior.

I don't want to disable Javascript because I don't know enough about it and what limitations there would be for browsing without it.

Thanks.

To my knowledge there is no way to prevent Safari from doing that, including its latest version.

Brave (for example) offers that option:

In my opinion the above example illustrates the polite way of implementing that feature.
