Just in time I discovered that iCloud drive had moved some 2500 files to the trash on my Mac. Apple says this can only happen if you remove them yourself. But I did not remove them. How can this happen?

One or more Recovered Files folders may appear in your Trash after you restart your Mac.
The recovered files are temporary files used by macOS apps. Usually temporary files are deleted by an app when it no longer needs them. If an app quits unexpectedly, it may not be able to delete the temporary files before it quits. When you restart your Mac, macOS moves these temporary files to the Trash.
Check with the developer if you’re not sure how to handle recovered files.
Only if you remove them yourself.
That's what Apple's helpdesk told me as well. But I'm sure I did not. 2500 files: Pages, Pdf, Numbers, mp3, any type of file, just random......went into the trash!
All Apple did say was change your password. .....
Yes, that's what I've been doing for hours and hours right now. But it still leaves me with an unanswered question, for I did not delete them either from a connected device, nor from iCloud Drive or iCloud.com. Thanks!
MY file moved into my trash as well. These are files I did not delete, but are originally on my home desktop. Two questions, as this is a new laptop..Is there something I need to set on this laptop to avoid these going into trash? if I did not discover this myself and these got deleted, would the original files still be on my computer at home?
There were no Recovered files folders in my trash. Just some 2500 files, no folders. This answer does not explain why iCloud removed those files to my trash.
The files are moved to Mac trash , and not from iCloud.com the files in iCloud trash .
Sorry I don't get it. The files were in my iCloud Drive and miraculously went to the Mac trash......Can you explain, please?
Files deleted at iCloud.com will appear in your Mac trash until permanently deleted.

But, they were deleted either at iCloud.com or on a connected device; perhaps even accidentally. As the files appeared in the trash, just restore them by selecting put back in the trash.
