Disable SharePlay completely

I have turned off SharePlay on my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. So it should not be possible for anybody to initiate a SharePlay with me or for it to ever start.

just moments ago, while watching Hulu on my Apple TV, I answered a FaceTime call and the TV gave me the option about doing a ShareTime. (The person calling me was in no way attempting to do ShareTime with me.) And ShareTime is off—on my phone, which is what I was talking on and on the Apple TV. What is happening? I don’t want to have to adjust it every single time someone calls me on FaceTime. I’m never going to use ShareTime and I thought turning it off on the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV was the answer. I should never see a dialogue box and have to choose if the service/option is turned off on my end.

Why is it still happening?

iPhone 13, iOS 16

Hey there msmsc,

We'd like to help by learning more about what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. You mentioned that you disabled SharePlay within your FaceTime settings, but you still see a prompt about SharePlay during a FaceTime call while watching a streaming video at the same time on your iPhone. Was there a time where the SharePlay prompt didn't show, and what does the entire prompt explain? If possible, please send us a screenshot.
  2. We see you have iOS 16 installed, but the latest version is iOS 16.5. You can verify this within Settings > General > About. In case you needed it, this link shows how to first back up, then update: Update your iPhone or iPad
  3. Any app updates available for the streaming services you use? Here are the steps to check: How to manually update apps on your Apple device

Cheers!

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply.

  1. Yes, there was a time after the first time this happened, for a couple of weeks, when SharePlay didn't activate. So I was upset and quite surprised that while on a FaceTime call a couple of days ago, I got that prompt again. A few weeks ago, after receiving a FaceTime call and hanging up, I was watching Hulu on my tv (with Apple TV) and it kept showing a prompt telling me that SharePlay wasn't available for this show, but to watch I had to click something like: Watch anyway. I didn't get a screenshot of that. At that time I called Hulu and then Apple and discovered that my iPhone and iPad were both set to turn on SharePlay automatically. So I turned that off on both my iPhone and IPad. A couple of days ago I received another FaceTime call on my iPhone while watching Hulu on my tv via Apple TV, and when I looked at the screen it had that same message again--that SharePlay wasn't available and I could click cancel (not watch anything) or click on the choice that said something along the lines of I'll watch without SharePlay. I didn't get a screenshot. There is an option on the Apple TV about SharePlay, too and I turned that off or did whatever to get rid of it.
  2. iPhone is 16.4.1, Apple TV is 16.5, iPad is 16.4.1 (though it wasn't turned on during this current exchange)
  3. My apps auto-update

Given that I've turned off the function of ShareTime why doesn't it stay off? I never want to use it and I want to be able to accept and make FaceTime calls without that somehow affecting my apple tv.
