The contact initials changed to purple when I sent a text to a friend. What does this mean? None of the other ones changed.

Generally the contact initials, in the Messages app, can change colors if you manually edit and change it OR if there is another contact with the same initials in your Contacts app.

This JUST happened to me as well on my iPhone 14 Pro. The initials just faded. And I looked to see if I had any contacts with the same initials as some one suggested and I don’t. So still wondering what just caused that. It’s still faded even after the conversation ended.
The color of someone’s initials in my text turned to lite purple instead of grey. What does that mean? I never received another text from that person after the initials turned purple. Does that mean she is not getting my texts now?
