For example, they are discouraging iPhone 6 owners from buying a new battery, and the iPhone 5 is even older. It's one step from Obsolete as far as Apple Service is concerned.

Worth a try, but I think you may have to find an independent shop and gamble on a 3rd party battery if you want to proceed.

Apple will replace it for $49.

There are some iPhone models where Apple has listed continued battery service availability well beyond the standard 5 years or even after the 7 year "vintage" status. The iPhone is obviously one of those.

It's still reporting as possible in the United States, but you might be dealing with poor parts availability. And on top of that would be the issue with how long it's going to be supported. The iPhone 5 is over 10 years old and I'm sure that app support is pretty poor now.

It is possible. Apple will replace the battery in your iPhone 5 for $49 USD.
