Presumably you didn’t purchase these from Apple (or an authorized reseller) and break the tamper-evident seals yourself … ?
Legitimate serial numbers can be counterfeited as well.
Your best indicators therefore will be a close visual inspection AND the LACK of a “AirPods could not be verified” message from your iPhone/IPad.
