McAfee pop-ups

I keep getting pop-ups from McAfee saying: "Security alert. You've visited illegal infected website. Your MAC is at risk of being infected by viruses. To continue browsing safely - perform an antivirus scan"

How do I get rid of this annoying pop-up?

Malwarebytes doesn't catch this bug. I just ran a scan and it didn't find it.

Get rid of Norton. It's quite literally useless. And you, unfortunately, bought it thinking you had a malware issue due to fake McAfee notifications.

I assume these are sliding in the from the top right of the screen, which means a site you visited has given itself permission to send push notifications. Everything you're seeing is nothing but a scam.

Open Safari's preferences. Click on the Websites tab and then scroll down to Notifications. Clear any entries in the right hand window. You might find something similar in the Pop-up Windows heading below that. Block any you don't recognize.

Then if you want, uncheck the box on the right, as shown below here.

I personally can't think of any reason why I would ever want any website to push notices to me.

I did not renew McAfee last December and started Norton for security. McAfee sends constantly popups about infection.

Consider removing both McAfee and Norton using the vendor-provided removal tools, and using the built-in anti-malware.

The built-in anti-malware has prevented the add-on anti-malware from making stupid mistakes by deleting parts of macOS itself too, not that Norton hasn’t been inexplicably yammering about a normal and benign process (chronod) for months.

Download and run Etrecheck. Be sure to give it Full Disk access before running.

Copy and paste the results into your reply. Etrecheck is a diagnostic tool that was developed by one of the most respected users here in the ASC and recommended by Apple Support  to provide a snapshot of the system and help identify the more obvious culprits that can adversely affect a Mac's performance.

Copy the report

and use the Additional Text button to paste the report in your reply.

Then we can evaluate the report to see if we can determine the cause of the problem.

Thanks for the directions on how to run a scan with EntreCheck. I suspect I may have found the source of the problem in the form of some unidentified piece of software called:

com.pia.pia_manager.plist

In the EtreCheck report I've just posted above here, this is listed in the section for Clean up.

Anyway, I deleted that file and restarted the computer. No alerts have come up since. But maybe that's because I also turned off alerts in my System Preferences for some applications.
