Newish 24" iMac Can anyone help with this please? Apple did talk me through it some time ago but most of advisers cannot grasp that there is nothing wrong with my hardware

Sounds like you have Mouse Keys enabled. Press the option key 5 times quickly to turn it off.
You're welcome. I should have asked, are you using a Magic Keyboard with a Numeric Keypad?
This almost worked but you need to hold down Control and then press option Key 5 times

Magic Keyboard digits 7,8,9, do not show on screen.
