Just got my new HomePod Mini and it updated to 16.5, turned on the smoke detector recognition. Tested it with pushing the smoke detectors test button for 5 seconds next to the HomePod, but it did not detect it and send a message.
Any experiences with it here? Does it maybe only send notifications when it is alarming for more than a few seconds?
That's unfortunate. I don't have an alarm right now but I've successfully tested the principle with a YouTube video and my HomePod sent out an alert. Perhaps your alarm noise is atypical. You could let Apple know that it isn't working for you along with details of model of smoke alarm you have via Feedback - HomePod - Apple.

It likely needs more than a few seconds to trigger to prevent false alarms. Try a longer test.
