No Full Screen Video With iPad After Update

Against my better judgement, I upgraded the iOS on a ten-year-old iPad Air to iOS 16.4.1. Among the myriad problems that this has created, the most distressing is the inability to send a video from the iPad to my 55" Samsung HDTV and get the full-screen playback that was always available before this blasted update was installed.

All connection options have the same playback issue: AirPlay and Screen Mirroring to my Apple TV, and using the Lightning Adapter and an HDMI cable directly connected to the 55" monitor. To repeat, all of these connections were never a problem before the update.

Thanks for any suggestions that might resolve this issue.

Hello StanzStanz,

Are you having issues playing this video in a specific app or multiple apps? As this issue may be related to the specific video you are trying to playback on the TV. Some apps do not support or no longer support videos to be played on another device.

Apple recently released iPadOS 16.5. We'd ensure that the iPad Air is updated to this version and that the apps are also updated for the latest fixes:

Should it persist, does this occur with multiple apps? Are you able to playback videos in the Photos app when using AirPlay to this TV? Is the TV updated (if using a Smart TV)? As these answers will help us assist you moving forward.

Take care.

The problem occurs with Safari, Chrome, and Firefox browsers, all of which have been updated to the latest versions.

If I shoot a video with the native iPad camera, the video will playback with the expected full-screen reproduction.

Another recently discovered glitch occurs when attempting to Air Play a browser-based video. The audio can be clearly heard, but the video is not, and all that is shown on the 55" monitor is the Apple TV home screen.

After almost THREE hours on the phone this past Saturday with Apple support, the problem remained unresolved. A phone conference providing additional assistance is scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, but I am skeptical that this will offer a resolution. A quick perusal of this problem on the Internet has shown that this IOS update has caused similar video playback problems which defy correction. Apple support did not recommend updating to IOS 16.5 until they have had additional time to investigate this anomaly.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Well, after a week of trying to resolve this issue with Apple Support, there is still no fix for this problem, a problem that the tech I worked with seemed surprisingly unaware of! And yet, the Internet is rife with incidents of this very issue after updating iPads to ios 15.

Even after I performed another ios update, this time to 16.5, the problem remains. It does not affect all sites, but NPR is the most notable manistream site not giving full-screen AirPlay or Screen Mirroring playback. There were many other sites not playing back correctly, but that one sticks in my mind as it is a very popular destination for many users. There were also many sites that did offer the desired full-screen playback option. Go figure!

Well as usual, one step forward and two steps back!!
