Alexa app keeps resetting

i use the Amazon Alexa in my kitchen to manage my shopping list, and the Alexa app on my iPhone while I’m in the supermarket. The Alexa app refreshes every time it opens but unfortunately my local supermarket has terrible coverage. If I haven’t opened my phone every couple of minutes to keep the Alexa app ‘current’, it attempts to restart and reload, but fails because of no network.

Is there a way to stop the app from being closed down by the iPhone while the phone screen is switched off?

iPhone XR, ios16.4.1 (a), Alexa 2.2.536317.

Thanks!

Hi FrugalFred,

You may want to check to make sure that Background App Refresh is enabled for the app so that it doesn't go into a suspended state:

Use Background App Refresh

After you switch to a different app, some apps run for a short period of time before they're set to a suspended state. Apps that are in a suspended state aren’t actively in use, open, or taking up system resources. With Background App Refresh, suspended apps can check for updates and new content.

If you want suspended apps to check for new content, go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and turn on Background App Refresh. If you quit an app from the app switcher, it might not be able to run or check for new content before you open it again.

We hope that helps.

Take care.

I already tried that, but thanks anyway!

For future reference if anyone is having similar this seems relevant - Prevent iOS from killing the app w… | Apple Developer Forums. From that it looks like it’s not possible to stop it being suspended and relaunched.

I guess then in that case it’s really an app issue, I’ll try Amazon support.

Thanks for the help anyway.

Hey FrugalFred,

We'd be happy to help out. Sounds like the root of your issue is the poor connection within the grocery store you're shopping at. There isn't really anything that can be done about that though until service in that area is improved with your wireless carrier. If they have free Wi-Fi available in your grocery store, we'd suggest connecting to it instead to establish a better connection.

If the issue persists after establishing a strong data connection, try reinstalling the app. If all else fails, you can reach out to Amazon support using this link: Get Alexa Help - Resources and Troubleshooting | Amazon.com

We hope this helps out.

Take care!

Hi UTBadger and thanks for the reply. I’m guessing that the reason the app keeps resetting/reloading is because something in iOS - presumably the power management - keeps switching it off. In Android it’s possible to tell the OS not to perform power management on specific apps, so that they keep running in background and aren’t reset. Is there something similar in iOS? Thanks for any help you can give.
