Cannot reinstall MacOS after erasing hard drive

I am giving away an Intel-based Air and wanted to erase all of my data. I followed the instructions to erase the hard drive in Recovery mode. When I went to reinstall MacOS, I got this screen: When I returned to Disk Utility, I saw this: I have no idea what to do with this.

1. Start up from macOS Recovery

Option-⌘-R

Upgrade to the latest macOS compatible with your Mac.


APFS won't work for Sierra, Sierra needs MacOS Extended Journaled, but Mac HD should work for Catalina‽.


What has often worked for others is to use this Restore Method instead of CMD+r keys...
