Unable to remove WORD from the DOC

Unable to remove " Word" in the doc; this comes up with the welcome to microsoft screen. At this point I am unable to quit/shut down the mac but have to "Force shut down" otherwise MB remains on

That's just poor user interface design. Your resolution is too low. Go to System Settings > Displays and pick a higher resolution. Then you will be able to see the buttons on the bottom. You might also need to auto-hide the dock. Once you dismiss the window, you can restore your old settings.
