Thank you, Peggy. (Got email telling me to reply to Peggy's response. This was puzzling. My name is Peggy, too.)
I tried adding .numbers and got a "The file format is invalid" window. Realized I had created it in ClarisWorks, and had tried (in 2002 or so) to make numbers the default for all those spreadsheets. Some converted but not all. A lost cause?
Since it's a ClarisWorks/AppleWorks file, add the .cwk file extension. Newer versions of Numbers (since October, 2013) can't open these files but LibreOffice can. You can download it at https://www.libreoffice.org. I was able to open an AppleWorks 6 spreadsheet just now in LibreOffice.
Thanks again, Peggy. Will follow up as you recommend.
I find that happens with very old files I've copied over from a much older Mac, usually on with image files. First, try adding the .numbers extension to the file name in Finder.
I have read that LibreOffice can open ClarisWorks files. It may not be perfect but it might be good enough.
Thanks. I'll try that too.
It's perfect. Thanks so much.
