Help for zoom effects involving Stencil Alpha PNGs

Bear with me while I translate an effect I am trying to achieve in FCPX...

I have a PNG that I've applied Stencil Alpha to. This PNG is overlayed over a video file. The idea is to create an artificial zoom on the Z-axis so I can have the "camera" zoom in and the PNG file would sort of fly away. I've tried achieving this with keyframes, having the last frame of the png file be enlarged so that it looks like the camera flies through the text but the results never work as planned. Is there a better way to do this? Is this sort of thing achieved better in Apple Motion?

here's an earnest attempt

In addition to what Tom provided, here is something similar that you can then use in FCP (you can use the z-position parameter to "fly into/through the image"):

MacBreak Studio Ep 376: Working with Vector Graphics in FCP X

I find this video a bit less intimidating that the one Tom linked to (especially for those new to Motion). This technique is quite useful for making scalable logos/images from PDF files, too.
