Drag and drop from desktop in Ventura

I've just installed Ventura. I like the fact that all my desktop clutter now disappears when I've got a window open, but how do I now drag a file from my desktop into whatever I'm working on? It seems I can have my desktop files visible or my active window but not both at the same time. I know I can add as an attachment but I prefer the ease of drag and drop. Thanks.
