Why is Apple TV so spotty? I have to literally use my phone to watch anything it constantly lags and skips parts of shows! I literally stopped renting movies from this app because I cannot even watch a whole movie without it lagging and closing the app completely. Can someone please explain why the most expensive products have the crappiest apps that are not compatible with every tv. It’s absolutely ridiculous!

You mention that your iPhone works more reliably for watching movies or TV shows. Is that also when connecting to the same home network [1]? If so, then the network and network settings are probably fine.
Do you have an Apple TV box connected to a TV, if so which model [2] [3],
or do you use the Apple TV app among your smart TV apps [4],
or do you have a third party tv-connected streaming device with the Apple TV app? [5]
As a test, have you tried AirPlay? Does that do better, the same, or worse?
Can you measure the network bandwidth available on the TV or streaming device?
Apple recommends 25 Mbps or more for 4K HDR content, per streaming device.
Have you tried a cold restart of all devices in the setup?
Have you checked for software updates for the TV, and/or for the streaming device?
