TimeMachine cannot be found as the backup location

I'm trying to backup my MacBook, Late 2009 (mac OS High Sierra, V 10.13.6). I have always used TimeMachine with no external drive attached. Now it seems that I've done something and possibly removed TimeMachine as the backup location. I've attempted to set up TimeMachine again; however, it is not being found. Any suggestions at all? I'm at a total loss here! Thanks!

Time Machine is specifically designed to be used to backup to an external device. It sounds like you may have been trying to backup to your Mac's internal hard drive. If so, that is wrong. When your hard drive fails, as all eventually do, everything on it will be lost. You need to purchase an external drive with a capacity of at least two or three times as large as the data stored on your HD. These days they are reasonably priced and easily installed with a vendor provided USB cable, although it may need to be first reformatted. Then, problem solved.
