Apple apps change my name to all caps

Various Apple apps like Mail, Safari, and Notes change my full name to all-capitals.

This only happens when both first and last name are typed. Example, if I type "John Doe" (assuming that's my name), a spelling suggestion pop-up box will suggest that it's spelled "JOHN DOE" and will automatically correct the spelling. A few observations:

  • Only happens for the full name, typing only first name or only last name will not cause this
  • Only happens on Apple apps, does not happen on third party apps such as MS Word
  • Only happens for my own name, not for other names
  • First observed after MacOS system upgrade to 13.3.1 (22E261)
  • Full name is spelled correctly in Contacts > My Card
  • Full name is spelled correctly in the user account

Please could you advise which setting or file contains the information on my name in upper case? I have run a full text search using

grep -r "JOHN DOE" /

However, this has not returned any results. Please do not suggest setting up a text replacement, booting in safe mode, or creating a new user account.

Hey nico-86,

We’d be happy to help out. It sounds like you’d like to prevent your Mac from auto-correcting your fully typed out name to auto-capitalize.

While of course a text replacement could help here, we also understand that you don’t want a workaround, but a true solution so we’ll see what else we can figure out.

Do you notice that this only happens within a specific application or within all apps on your Mac? Is it only with your name or are others impacted as well? By gathering more information on your issue we’ll be able to better determine the best path forward. As there’s not a “Reset Keyboard Dictionary” option on Mac like there is on iOS, these details will help us isoalte further.

If you go to System Settings > Keyboard, are there any text replacements set up that might be causing this to occur? If so, delete any you don’t require.

Additionally in these same settings you should see which keyboard you’re using and an “Edit” option next to the keyboard you’re using under “Text Input”. Let us know what you have selected here and if everything is enabled under “Edit”. Do you perhaps have multiple keyboard inputs added?

The more information you can provide us with the better. Also, does this occur on any other devices, such as an iPhone or iPad?

We look forward to hearing what you find out and please review the steps above.

Take care!

Hi UTBadger,

I have the same problem, running macOS Monterey 12.7.1. (language/region set to Dutch/Netherlands). It seems to occur in pre-installed apps (Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders) but not in e.g. Pages or 3rd party apps.

There is no text replacement in my Keyboard settings.

I cannot check the "Edit" option because this is different in Monterey (or I am missing the correct translation to Dutch). Input device is my MacBook Pro keyboard with touchbar (MBP 2016).

This problem doesn't occur on my iPhone 14 Pro/iOS 17.1.2 or iPad (9th gen)/iOS 17.1.2.

My surname consists of 4 parts, interestingly the capitalisation happens after I have typed the first 3, but doesn't affect my first name or the last part.

I see that a lot of other people have been reporting the same issue for at least a year, and although it's not a serious problem I do find it quite bizarre that nobody has found a cause or a solution.

Thanks in advance!
