How to fix freezing screen after iOS 16.4.1 update

How to correct glitches that occur after an update? My apps freeze , my notifications aren’t coming through (calls, texts etc). I consistently get the black screen. I can’t even shut it down using the buttons. I have to go into settings in order to reboot. Please assist.

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 16

Two basic troubleshooting steps to perform (test after each attempt):

A) Try a "forced" restart of your device using these instructions: Put it on charge for at least half an hour, then, keeping it plugged in, use these gestures:

Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the side (power) button. Only when the Apple logo appears (it might take 10-20 seconds), release that button (ignore all other screens that might appear, the one with the "slider" to turn the device off included).

B) If the issue persists, something could have gone wrong during the latest update procedure.

I would try to install a fresh copy of iOS/iPadOS (the latest available/supported by your device model). To do this, create a full backup of your iPhone/iPad (1), then restore it to factory settings (you need a computer to perform this step) and, in the end, set it up as new (2).

When done, restore data from your previously made backup (3).

Follow the instructions provided in these support articles:

(1) How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch – Apple Support

(2) Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings – Apple Support

(3) Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup

If the issue still persists, it might be some hardware internal component failure, and I suggest that you make an appointment (*) and have your device inspected at an Apple Store or AASP (Apple Authorized Service Provider) among this list:--> https://locate.apple.com/choose-country-region . After checking it out, they'll give you all the available options.

Yes, I’ve seen others select me too on this post. I’ve updated my iPhone 14 pro max to 16.4.1. Ever since then, my phone constantly freezes in any app (messages, what’s app, social media apps, phone calls). I’ve tried to force quit it and open again but it doesn’t help. I’ve received calls but my phone won’t allow me to answer. I can say hello and press accept, the phone continues to ring and light up. If I’m able to accept a call , I can’t hang up. It will say call ending but the time clock is still going as if the call is in session. The Bluetooth isn’t working properly either, sometimes it connects and other times it won’t. I’ve tried to keep it on wifi and remove it to see if that’s apart of the issue - no avail. I’ve done a hard reboot multiple times a day just to unfreeze through settings. I’m considering a factory reset at this point because I can’t have my calls not coming through in the event my children or caretakers need to reach me.

Many users who have updated to iOS 16.4.1 must have a similar issue if the issues stated by you are due to the iOS.

Unless you state what the issue is many in this forum may not be able to respond positively to the issue you are facing.

With the limited information that you have provided, It is hard to even guess the problems faced by you.

Hi!

I see that this is a widespread problem. You might want to try a forced reboot first, but if it doesn’t work the way you described, move on to the next solution. Anyway, to make a forced restart:

Press and release the Volume Up button quickly

Quickly press and release the Volume Down button

Long press the Side Button (power) until the Apple logo appears

The second solution is to restore, configure and update your iPhone again, all via Finder or iTunes. To restore:

If you have a Mac with MacOS Catalina 10.15 or later: Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the Finder. At this point you need to put the iPhone in recovery mode. To do so:

Quickly press and release the Volume Up button

Quickly press and release the Volume down button

Long press the side button (power) until the Apple logo appears

At this point select the device in the list on the side, press on "General" and then on "Restore".

If you have a Mac running MacOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier or a Windows PC: Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. At this point you need to put the iPhone in recovery mode. To do so:

Quickly press and release the Volume Up button

Quickly press and release the Volume down button

Long press the side button (power) until the Apple logo appears

At this point select the device in the list on the side, press on "Summary" and then on "Restore".

Now you need to reconfigure your device. At the end update again, but for safety via Finder or iTunes. To do so:

If you have a Mac with MacOS Catalina 10.15 or later: Connect your iPhone to your computer and open the Finder. Select the device in the list on the side, press on "General" and then on "Check for updates". At this point press on "Download and update".

If you have a Mac running MacOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier or a Windows PC: Connect your iPhone to your computer and open iTunes. Select the device in the list on the side, press "Summary" and then "Check for updates". At this point press on "Download and update".

Your device should work now.

If the problem still persists, contact Apple Support.

I hope I helped you!

I just bought the new iPhone 15 pro a couple weeks ago with what I'm assuming is iOS 17.1.1. Within a week, it started freezing on me. It was so confusing initially because I've never had any issues with iPhones before and I've been using them for about 6 or 7 years now. I thought maybe I got a bad phone (which would be so upsetting considering how much money I spent and how annoying it would be to replace it). But I did some light research and it seems this is a common issue and possibly related to the iOS. One place I saw (can't find it now) said that Apple was aware of this problem and they were working on an update to correct it. Does anyone know if that is accurate? I mean, I can't be just suddenly without a phone and having to force re-boot it. I mean it would be bad for anyone, but I feel like as a woman it is very unsafe to not be able to rely on your phone. Please help.
