Samsung 34" G8 screen blurry on MBP

I have a new Samsung 34" Odyssey G8 screen connected to my 2019 MacbookPro via USB-C, and the text is very blurry, even at the lowest resolution offered by the MBP for that screen (1280x720 HiDPI), which 1) completely defeats the purpose of a larger screen and 2) gives me headaches to the point the screen is unusable for daily work. I have searched for options on forums etc but I do not seem to have any of the required features on OS Venture 13.2.1 (for example, LCD Font Smoothing, or others). Anyone with the same issue ? and a potential solution?

Thank you in advance.

Good afternoon,

I'd like to summarize all my actions so that others (if any) who have made the same mistakes as I did can benefit from the experience.

The screen is of great quality, works perfectly with the 2019 MPB, is automatically recognized and definition / refresh rate is stunning. What I did:

  • Turned the screen game mode off
  • Used a proper Apple Thunderbolt 3 cable (0,8m) up to 40 Gbits/s, up to 10 Gbit/s for USB Gen 2 jusqu’à 10 Gbit/s and 100 W power, instead of the USB C cable that came for the MBP power. The cable is a lot thicker).
  • Removed my USB C Hub from the signal chain

Samsung uses the name "G8" for at least two monitors:

  • A 34" ultra-wide, curved OLED monitor with 3440x1440 pixel resolution (109.7 PPI) and 175 Hz refresh rate.
  • A 32" OLED gaming monitor with 3840x2160 pixel resolution (137.7 PPI) and 240 Hz refresh rate.

Perhaps the '8' is a generation number, like the '3' in M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max. I'm adding this note in case anyone with "the other G8" stumbles across this thread.

That appears to be a very nice "4K" display with USB-C input.

A deep color display at this resolution is using a stream of data so fast that it is approaching the limits of switching speeds of digital data.

About your connection method:

Are you using any adapters or Docks in the connection?

is your cable a Certified USB-C 3.1 cable with USB SuperSeed plus stamped or molded into the end and no longer than One meter in length?

Cables "shipped in the box" are often "lowest bidder" cables, and are often barely good enough to keep you from returning the product. to run properly at top resolution, you need a certified cable as above.

I know your original post is old, but here goes (might help someone else as well). I have the same monitor (G8 Oled 34"). Download Better Display from github (google it), amazing app that opens up A LOT of additional screen settings. There you can set the resolution to make it look a lot better than the standard choices. There's a good Reddit post with great info: Tip for if you're using 3440x1440 displays with macOS : r/MacOS (reddit.com) .

Read it all. :)
