My son passed away recently, and need to unlock several Apple devices before deleting his account

The problem I am having is that the device-unlocking process as explained by Apple is not clear enough for me to follow. For example, I don't want to delete my son's account right away. What I need to do first is to unlock an older iMac to donate it, then an older iPod, an iPhone 6s, a M1 MacBook Air, and an iPhone 13. I already accessed the iMac and the MacBook Air using a password I created, then moved the photos and videos to a hard drive. But I want to donate all, not just one of these devices, to his brothers and sister. It means that each must be unlocked and his Apple ID be removed first.

I have all the documents Apple wants in order to delete my son's account, but again the process to follow in the Digital Legacy is not very clear, and there are no options for speaking with an Apple representative about the things I wrote above on the Digital Legacy page.

For information about how to request access to a deceased family member's Apple accounts, and through this their equipment, click here --> How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support

The alternative if you have the Apple receipts: Apple can completely reset a device if a person can provide sufficient evidence of valid ownership. Do this online at: Activation Lock support request - https://al-support.apple.com/#/additional-support Apple says, "Proof of ownership documentation is required," but does not state what currently constitutes proof. Prior to this new online service Apple typically required the original receipt issued by Apple or an Apple Authorized Reseller and documented provenance (so typically it would be the original owner who does this, or a descendant with legal proof of ownership).

Per the article you are referring to it says "if you need additional help, please contact Apple Support." Your options will be to call or chat Apple, a call is probably best.

After opening that link you'll want to select Other Apple ID Topics > Delete Apple ID > Continue > scroll down and select the Call option. Then you'll be connect with an Advisor who can help answer all your questions.

My thanks to both of you for helping me with the issue above. I contacted Apple and received a phone call and figured how to delete and then update my son's MacBook. The problem now is that my son's iPhone 13, 6s, and an iPod touch are locked to his Apple ID and account. I don't need Apple to transfer my son's account to me, just to erase his account so I can erase these three devices and donate them to family members (nothing else).
