How do I access my late father's mini iPad without his Apple ID credentials?

My dad passed several years ago and I now have his mini ipad. Can I delete his account but keep his photos? How can I do that… if it’s even possible? I saw a place in settings to reset, and or erase all content and settings. Just not sure how much it erases. He didn’t use iCloud so nothing is stored there. Plus I don’t know his apple id #.

I have an iPhone so I do have my own account, but we never merged our accounts or anything. As you can tell I really don’t even know if I’m asking the right questions. Lol

Do you have access to the device? Also his Apple ID and password? If you do, you can sign him out and sign yourself in with your ID. When you sign in it will ask you if you wish to retain various types of data. Say yes, keep, for the various kinds you wish to keep. It will then merge this data with your account on the iPad. If you use iCloud it will also add it to your iCloud. I did exactly that 6 years ago when I was given a deceased person's device but asked to keep hold of photos until the family was sure they had them. The family had the device passcode, and back then some of the security measures that you might face now weren't around so it was a bit easier. Even if you do not know his ID, if you do know the passcode and can get into the device you can then use his email account to email the photos to yourself, or use Airdrop to transfer via Bluetooth if you have Apple equipment. How to use AirDrop on your iPhone or iPad - AppleSupport Without his account information you just won't be able to make the iPad "yours" by signing him out of it. For that you would need to do the next set of instuctions.

If you do not have access to his accounts then the standard, but more tedious, way to do this is described in this article: How to request access to a deceased family member's Apple account - Apple Support

While you can erase his things, you won't be able to make the device your own because very likely Find My was set and will require his account information to remove. You might even be able to use it for a while but eventually you might be trying to do something which will require it and trigger Activation Lock. If you want to use it, you have to find the information or get Apple to reset it for you.

Typically this would be done, but y applying to Apple as in the article I provided earlier you can get them to make it accessible to you so you can fully reset it.

Thank you so much for your help. I do have his device, but the password or Apple ID that my mom wrote down several years back when he had received it doesn't work. I ended up airdropping his pictures to my iphone and I can now delete or erase his info on his ipad. So, once I clear things out, and set up my own info I can send the pictures back to the ipad so I have memories of him on it still. Thanks again for responding so quickly!!
