Alternating row color in tables not working

I saw this question about Numbers before (I am in Pages with a table) but it did not resolve my issue. The table has absolutely no fill color anywhere and still alternating row color is not working.

When you select a table design to insert, you can choose between plain and variations of alternating row color. Upon insertion, the Table tab is selected in the right panel and below the gridlines section is a checkbox for Alternating Row Color. Adjacent to it is a alternating row fill color inkwell or color chooser globe to customize that specific row color, or disable it completely.
