i set my apple tv to allow dolby atmos and also connect to AVR that supports dolby atmos but still could not get dolby atmos. I also set speakers out as home theatre rather than TV speakers but it always come back to TV speakers. Is this connected? Or is it because i have not set my apple music app ( i don’t plan to use apple music on my apple tv).
How is your setup connected?

or
Apple TV →[HDMI]→ TV ⇄[HDMI (e)ARC]⇄ AV receiver
or something else?
Dolby Atmos works or doesn’t work for Apple TV. The Disney+ app should use the device settings. If it works for other apps with Atmos content on the Apple TV box, then it should work for the Disney+ app as well.
See if there are updates available, and install that new version if applicable. If it happens for a lot of users with the Disney+ app on Apple TV 4K, then it may be a bug in the app. Only Disney would be able to remedy that by releasing an update with a fix.

Ok. Is that using the Disney+ Hotstar app? That may have some unknown differences with the Disney+ app as used in North America and Europe. I can’t check that, unfortunately.

Yes. Apple TV 4K has 4 formats for audio output:
- Dolby Atmos in Dolby MAT format (uncompressed like PCM); only in combination with the PCM setting.
- PCM Multichannel up to 7.1
- Dolby Digital 5.1 (compressed)
- Stereo 2.0
why doesn't apple make it possible to send passthru?
Apple doesn’t tell us the reasons behind their decisions.
i also noticed that under each movie audio there is a line say passthru but with spdif in the bracket. how can it passthru spdif when the onlt setup is thru hdmi?
That is indeed very odd and illogical to me. I have never seen that on the Apple TV box. Where do you see that?

the OS is updated to 16.4 but still sound from disney+ via AVR wqs PCM. i also noticed that for each movie i selected on disney+ even the series mandarolian, it only showed dolby5.1 and not dolby atmos. but even with that the sound was still PCM (shown on AVR). i used Marantz SR6014.
do i need to use HDMI (e)arc to connect to projector, for this i used hdmi which is fibre optic as it is quite a long distance (6 metres).

That is fine. ARC or eARC refers to the HDMI ports, if available on your devices, not the cabling.

Then the issue is with the content supplier (Disney+). Could it be that Disney+ has format differences for certain countries and regions, or for certain subscription plans? (Just guessing.) Do contact Disney Support about why you are not seeing Atmos streams on your Atmos enabled setup.

Apple TV decodes Dolby Digital 5.1 in the source to PCM 5.1 losslessly, so that is expected.

i did the force quit and restart as suggested but nothing changed. still could not find out whether Disney had different packages for different regions/countries that will affect dolby atmos or pic quality. the forum in Thailand on disney+ seems to confirm that it is available in Thailand (where i am).
