Pictures - I have an Apple 3 that I don't know the passcode and I want to see if there are any pictures on the phone. Would these have been transferred via a SIM card when we went to iphone 7?

Nope nothing is stored on the sim card. You would've have to backup your 3 to itunes and then use that backup when you set up your iphone 7
