iPrint to a Brother MFC-J6510DW printer

Hi,

I have been printing via iPrint from my Mac Studio for the past 8 months or so, to a Brother MFC-J6510DW printer. A couple of days ago it lost connection and said it was offline. I have checked WLAN settings, which says configuration is correct and ok. I have been in contact with Brother who at first gave me some instructions to follow to fix the issue. They then informed me it was an issue because Apple had changed some Drivers. Is this correct?

When trying to add the printer via System Preferences, I can select my printer however it won't allow me to select anything on the 'Choose a Driver' hence the 'Add' button is greyed out and I can't reinstall the printer.

Any advise please, I seem to be going around in circles and getting nowhere. Is it correct that Apple changed Drivers? and this being the reason why I can no longer add my printer?

I have downloaded the Brother iPrint and Scan app, I can still scan from the printer, with no issues

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi,

>I have been printing via iPrint

Do you possibly mean AirPrint, or did you use Brother's iPrint&Scan application for Mac earlier?

The Brother MFC-J6510DW is not mentioned in the latest About AirPrint - Apple Support, but the model was listed in the July 01, 2022 (en-us) edition.

AirPrint should allow you to print without additional drivers, provided that the printer and the Mac are connected to the same network (Wi-Fi router). AirPrint works with wireless (Wi-Fi) or wired (Ethernet) network connections, so one could choose to wire the printer to one of the LAN ports of a Wi-Fi router instead of using Wi-Fi. An Ethernet printer connection may be more stable, and would rule out any difficulties involving different Wi-Fi bands, et cetera. The Mac could of course still print wirelessly via the router.

The specifications for your printer indicate that Ethernet is available as well as Wi-Fi.

Add a printer to your printer list so you can use it on Mac – Apple Support (UK)

Reset the printing system on your Mac to solve a problem – Apple Support (UK)

If necessary, you may want to try a full power cycle sequence (do not forget the router).

The latest printer driver from Brother appears to be for macOS 10.15 Catalina. Sometimes, a Catalina driver works with some newer operating system versions, too, but that would be experimental.

Drivers from the printer manufacturer may or may not add functionality, and would be required for USB.
