Trying to log into this IMAP account failed.

I just reinstalled Monterey. Mail fails trying to log into my gmail (& icloud IMAP) accounts. I deleted my gmail account (in System Preferences : Internet Accounts). When I try to add the Google account back in, it opens the browser and I enter the correct email addy and password. The browser window closes and I get the 'Select the apps you want' dialog back in System Preferences : Internet Accounts. When I click Done, the done button grays out and it just sits there.

I AM currently logged in to Gmail, and can receive new mail in the web page, so it's not a Google problem.

Also having trouble with a Update to Apple ID settings message in System Preferences which won't let me fix.

Is my admin account corrupt???
