Airpod pro noise cancelling during calls

I am using Airpod Pro 2s and have an interesting issue where noise cancelling is partially disabled when starting a call (or web conference, anything with the mic it seems). Noise cancelling works fine before the call and will go back to working correctly once the call is ended. I can force noise cancelling back on during the call if I switch the Airpods to from noise cancelling to transparency then back to noise cancelling so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue. Have attempted changing the mic from auto/left/right with no difference in behavior.
