Connecting an external microphone on iPhone XR

I have tried connecting an external Apogee microphone (with 3.5 mm audio jack to lightning adaptor). I don’t hear any difference in audio recorded.

is there a third party app needed to ensure the iPhone records from the external microphone source and not the internal built in mic?

Hi Paramvir Singh,

Thank you for posting to the Apple Support Communities.

It may be necessary to install a third party app that is designed to work with your external microphone. The microphone manufacture should have more instructions for this. You can also find instructions for contacting a developer in this Apple Support article: How to contact an app developer

After installing an app, you may need to allow microphone access for the app. Open Settings > Privacy > Microphone to manage which apps can use the microphone. You can also find additional troubleshooting steps in this last link: If the microphones on your iPhone aren't working.

All the best!
