HDMI switch for M1 Macbook Pro

Hello everyone,

As the title suggest I am looking for recommendations on a HDMI switch that is compatible with my Macbook Pro.

My monitor: the Samsung Odyssey G5 LC***XEN only has 1 HDMI port. I have a Nintendo Switch and my Macbook that I wish to connect to the display, so I need a (preferably automatic) HDMI switch that is compatible with my Macbook when it is in shellmode.

I tried searching the web but did not find any info on the topic. My current HDMI switch does not work with my Macbook. Wish I could tell you the brand, but I honestly don't know (cheap one from Amazon)

Hope y'all can give some advice.

Sound like maybe the output is set to high for the either the switch or the actual TV. The switch you link to, is a 1080p switch, which mans it won't support the Macs native resolution.

Try going to Displays in System Setting / Preferences and changing the resolution for the external display from there to something lower.

There's no real specific HDMI switches for Macs. Any switch should work with the Mac assuming it can detect the signal from the Mac. It's unlikely you'll find one specifically made for Macs as HDMI is a universal standard, and will work the same across any device that uses it.

Why not? What happens when you connect the switch to the Mac? Does it have no branding or label on it?

Does it have buttons to change inputs?

It may not be automatic, you may need to change the source.

The Mac uses a system that reminds me of “Plug and play” to determine what display is connected, and what its capabilities are.

To get a Mac display to become active, you need the Mac to query the display, and the display to answer with its name and capabilities. Otherwise, the display will not be shown as present, and no data will be sent to the display. "No signal detected" is generated by the DISPLAY, not by the Mac.

This query is only sent at certain times:

• at startup

• at wake from sleep — so momentarily sleeping and waking your Mac may work

• at insertion of the Mac-end of the display-cable, provided everything on that cable is ready-to-go

• hold the Option key while you click on the (Detect Display) button that will appear in Displays preferences (from another display)

This makes it appear that the Mac does not work through switch, but if you understand what needs to go back and forth, you can make the right stuff happen and get the display to light up.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for your reply.

So I checked again after reading your questions. It seems that my Macbook in fact does recognize the screen through the HDMI switch. As it shows up in my display settings.

However the "no HDMI signal" message is shown on the monitor. Not sure if this means the issue lies within the monitor.

The switch automatically detects active signals, but also has a select button. I have been trying it with just the Macbook connected. There's a light that indicates which hdmi channel on the switch is active. (I don't know if it's this exact one, but it's very similar to this one: https://www.amazon.nl/-/en/HDMI-Switch-1080p-Switcher-Splitter-Supports/dp/B075R2DFJ1/ref=sr_1_39?crid=39YM0C3905JMU&keywords=hdmi+switch&qid=1680523759&sprefix=dmi+switch%2Caps%2C121&sr=8-39)
